"Sooner or later," Wilde notes, "we shall all have to pay for what we do." In An Ideal Husband, an ambitious government minister, Sir Robert Chiltern, is on an assured smooth ascent to the top. A young Scottish woman joins the French Resistance during World War II to rescue her Royal Air Force boyfriend who is lost in France. Is her husband having an affair?

Sir Robert is adored by his wife (Cate Blanchett), whose high standards would not permit her to be married to a cheat and liar. I enjoyed this film very much. Mrs. Cheveley uses this explosive evidence in her attempt to blackmail Sir Robert into voting against his conscience on the floor of Parliament. In the course of the plot machinations, romance appears: Goring falls in love with Chiltern's younger sister Mabel (Minnie Driver), and Mrs. Cheveley decides that Goring would be a splendid choice as her own third husband.

The dashing Lord Goring, the wealthy son of the Earl of Caversham, is an inveterate bachelor who lives a life of leisure.

Wilde's themes of political skulduggery and financial swindling at the highest levels of society are all the more pertinent today, and the theme of dark secrets between men and women is as old as Aristophanes and as new as the latest rap song.

It is important that we believe Lady Chiltern (Blanchett) loves her husband but loves his upright character even more and will leave him if she discovers his sins. The plot structure is a marvel.

Chiltern could lose everything including Gertrude.

Yet for me, the gravest revision is in the scene between Sir Robert and Lady Chiltern after Mrs Cheveley has malevolently forwarded her 'I want you/trust you/am coming to you' letter.
