So, with the weekend upon us and the great outdoors beckoning, here is a reminder of some of the top suggestions - readers' favourites and photographs among them - for an autumn family walk that makes it worth bracing the chill. This is one of the best places in Northumberland for fungi spotting and the walk to Staward Pele gives colourful views over the gorge and you might catch a glimpse of animals preparing for hibernation.
Some ideas may be new to some people: for instance, a lesser-known Gateshead wood - Hedley Hall at Sunniside - was singled out back in 2016 by The Woodland Trust - the conservation charity which owns more than 1,000 woods across the UK one of its top 10 nationwide choices for autumn colour. The small ponds on the reserve are excellent for viewing damselflies and dragonflies such as the striking southern hawker, and also support amphibians such as common frog and smooth newt. This 360-hectare mixed woodland is a real gem, set right on the fringe of Gateshead. Cross the River Allen at Plankey Mill for some especially lovely scenery.
Originally farmland, the site underwent sand and gravel extraction until 1964 when the area was given to Durham Wildlife Trust and restored as a nature reserve.
The land supports a wide range of birds and over 200 species have been recorded. Find your own way with our online library of thousands of incredible walking routes. There is an extensive network of paths throughout the wood that can get very muddy in winter/spring so wear wellies if you are coming this time of year. From Craster, this route winds around Embleton Bay. The wood is placed on a quite steep slope (though not that bad) so at some point you need to walk up hill if you walk the perimeter. We are lucky in the North East to have a mix of stunning scenery ranging from country landscapes and coastlines to cityscapes and riverbanks which make it a pleasure to get and about.
