SSI's AD&D "Gold Box" games were released in 1988-1992 and set in the fantasy worlds of Forgotten Realms and Dragonlance. D&D, Forgotten Realms, Balder's Gate, Wizards of the Multiclass characters are quite powerful (PoR has a level cap, not an XP cap), but if you transfer them into later game they will hit the racial level caps quite early.
