Major questions surrounding the film involve its take on feminism and its acceptability as a contemporary film noir. Verhaal.
I like the tag line on the cover, which reduces what is a remarkably sophisticated film to a classic, 1950s sounding pulp novel: ‘A small-town cop and New York call girl run a collision course with murder’. I believe this book has two types of humor which make it even better. This has been one of my all-time favorite chapter books to read! The film was a major hit and she won her first Oscar for it. Ultimately, Klute (1971) resolves the problem of gender inequality by demonstrating how the dichotomy of the sexes must be abolished and the gap between the two filled by equal sacrifices. It was funny that they thought Ms Klute was a grizzly bear. I thought this would be a relatively straight forward post, but as is often the case there is a story behind the author of this book. I laughed along with Gutman’s corny jokes, and overall, I do think that this title is a solid easy-read recommendation. The thing I enjoyed most about this book is that it is written just like I would expect an elementary aged child to write a book, with. According to an article on this site, much of which was taken by a longer piece by author, Lee Goldberg, Johnston penned a large number of them. It becomes another character in the film which only strengths the picture and adds a certain creeping menace to it. In this book William Johnston contrives a do-I-hear-wedding-bells happy ending, which is certainly not in the movie, Stuart, If Klute didn’t arrive Bree would be dead, but Klute didn’t completely save Bree. I had a lot of interest in my post earlier this week on Alan J Pakula’s wonderfully atmospheric 1971 movie, Klute. Here the film strongly implies that Bree–and, by extension, women–cannot be successfully independent. Refresh and try again. As you point out, even though Klute doesn’t physically stop Cable, it is his presence that keeps Bree alive. I would love it if you could send me a high resolution scan of the UK edition of the KLUTE paperback. Klute does not even physically touch Cable and although he may have indirectly caused Cable’s death, it is this distinction that is important. Fine gritty dramatic mystery that gets the pulse of NYC in the early 70's just right.
