I kept getting confused with the time travel stuff, and there were a lot of characters to keep straight. First, there was an impossible iceberg that wrecked the ship in the tropics; then, after being rescued by a Royal Mexican plane, they were hit by a double earthquake. The characters are uninteresting and unlikable and the story feels contrived and churned out. Like many of his later novels, it features Lazarus Long and Jubal Harshaw as supporting characters.
Thus, also, many of the characters that appear in other books were unknown to me.

I have not read this book but I am looking forward to it. Weiner gives Colin/Richard's first-person narrative a charming, softly sarcastic growl and Hazel/Gwen's voice a lovely globe-and-time-trotting sophistication. Gwen Novak is eventually revealed to be Hazel Stone, a character previously featured in Heinlein's The Rolling Stones and who had played a small but important role in The Moon Is a Harsh Mistress. If this is a 500 page book, then 490 of them were composed of the worst filler dialogue I've ever heard. 400 pages. Overall, I enjoyed listening to the audiobook recently after having read it shortly after it was first published, but I doubt that readers not familiar with Heinlein's earlier body of work would benefit much from it. The story ends with Campbell talking into a recorder (presumably the source of the first-person narrative) reflecting on the mission and his relationship with Gwen.
