Thorby is ultimately identified as Thor Bradley Rudbek, the long-lost heir of a very powerful family and a substantial shareholder in Rudbek and Associates, a large, sprawling interstellar business including one of the largest starship-manufacturing companies and the entire city of Rudbek (formerly Jackson Hole, Wyoming). Thorby is a young, defiant slave boy recently arrived at the planet Jubbul's capital Jubbulpore, where he is purchased by an old beggar, Baslim the Cripple, for a trivial sum and taken to the beggar's surprisingly well-furnished underground home. Citizen of the Galaxy is a science fiction novel by American writer Robert A. Heinlein, originally serialized in Astounding Science Fiction (September, October, November, December 1957) and published in hardcover in 1957 as one of the Heinlein juveniles by Scribner's. He appears to be a simple beggar, but is later revealed to be an anti-slavery agent (with a long history of heroism) who is working undercover. The rate of abridgment is simply too much. However, the lack of females realistically fit in well into his coming of age and his understanding of who he is and development of his feelings. Citizen of the Galaxy is the only Heinlein book I've ever read and that's because we read it in my 9th grade English class (not a common selection circa 2004 either, but my teacher was in her late 70s -- … When he discovers that he is a galactic citizen, however, with records on Earth, he becomes a citizen in the moral sense: He discovers, at the end of the novel, his responsibility to his entire race. (Robert Heinlein's Citizen of the Galaxy), Alice Oseman Recommends Her Favorite YA Graphic Novels. The main characters of this science fiction, fiction story are Thorby, Baslim the Beggar. Thought it would be fun to read this classic juvenile Robert Heinlein in comic book form. The settings are vivid, varied and imaginative. He fires Weemsby and assumes full control of the firm. The advanced education provided by Baslim and the fast reflexes of youth make him an ideal fire controlman; Thorby saves Sisu, destroying a pirate craft. The captain, who was one of Baslim's couriers, passes along Baslim's request that the Guard help reunite Thorby with his family, if possible. The world in which Thorby, the main character, grows up is much darker than any previously seen in Heinlein’s fiction. This was probably not the best choice of comic for me as i found the story and illustrations to be merely decent.

The novel follows Thorby, a young, strong-headed slave who is sold at auction on the planet Jubbul into the care of an elderly beggar, Baslim the Cripple. Skating somewhere between 2 and 2.5 on this one. His immediate superior, a young woman named Mata, begins to view him as a suitable husband—but the customs of the Free Traders forbid this, and to avoid trouble she is transferred to another ship. The key to understanding the major theme of Citizen of the Galaxy, and of the juvenile series as a whole, is in the title.

I received this book free for review from Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Just when Thorby gets accustomed to the nomadic life, however, he discovers where he came from before he was kidnapped, and he is returned “home”—to Earth. Galaxy reviewer Floyd C. Gale praised the novel, saying "Heinlein is invariably logical. My introduction to Robert Heinlein and could not put it down, was straight off to find more :), Great story and I would have loved there to have been a sequel, This felt overly condensed, and suffered for it. One of my favorite Heinlein books, the story of a young slave who gains freedom from his bonds, and gains a new life but at a heavy price.
His broad interests and concern for characterization as well as technology brought him a considerable number of admirers among general-interest readers. This book takes over several years and several settings. The story is heavily influenced by Rudyard Kipling's Kim. Thorby is adopted by the captain (thereby gaining considerable shipboard social status) and adjusts to the insular, clannish, matriarchal culture of the traders. In his absence, the business has been run by a relative by marriage, "Uncle" John Weemsby, who encourages his stepdaughter Leda to help Thorby adjust to his new situation while secretly scheming to block Thorby's growing interest and interference in the company. While this is a good adventure story on its own, much of the story and its intent would be lost to anyone who hasn't also read the novel. The vision of the future is just as sleek and clean and grimy and occasionally hopeful as I thought it would look like from the book. Because the 'Free Trader' society to whom Krausa belongs owes a debt to Baslim for the rescue of one of their crews from a slave trader, the captain takes Thorby aboard the Sisu at great risk to himself and his clan. When Weemsby quashes further investigation, Thorby seeks legal help and launches a proxy fight, which he unexpectedly wins when Leda votes her shares in his favor. The novel is set in the future when the human race has developed interstellar spaceflight and is engaged in trade with a number of alien races. Following Baslim’s orders, given to him under hypnosis before Baslim’s death, Thorby seeks out Captain Krausa of the spaceship Sisu. If you liked the original you’ll love this, and if you never read it you won’t feel like you’re missing anything with this version. But I think the story could be an interesting TV series, or movie..But it didn't work for me as a Comic overall. Mediocre attempt to recreate a graphic version of the Heinleinian classic book of the same title. The high-gloss visuals don't really equate with the original style of Heinlein – gritty, matter-of-fact, masculine, mature (and even though this was a junior read by the great author, his are a lot more mature than some books for the same market these days). He begins to train Thorby in his trade, without telling the boy about the “X-Corps.” Baslim is killed by powerful enemies before Thorby can learn his secret. Baslim, aware that this education will not help him on a world where social mobility is very limited, begins arranging for Thorby's future, of which the boy is only partially aware. He turns out to be a secret agent of the Exotic Corps, an interplanetary police force combating slavery. Fortunately for Thorby, this adoptive father had arranged before his death for Thorby to leave the planet Jubbul on a Free Trader ship.

I really enjoyed leaning more about him and his search for his true self- a typical archetype, but I believe it worked very well for this story. In the Sisu, however, Thorby is adopted into a family and learns to feel a loyalty to the entire ship. When his espionage activities are eventually discovered by the harsh, autocratic government of the planet Sargon, Baslim winds up dead.
