Early Life: Gustav Holst, was born to a family of Swedish extraction (by way of Latvia and Russia). Towards the end of his life, Gustav Holst wrote Choral Fantasia (1930), and he was commissioned by the BBC to write a piece for military band; the resulting Hammersmith was a tribute to the place where he had spent most of his life, a musical expression of the London borough (of Hammersmith), which begins with an attempt to recreate the haunting sound of the River Thames sleepily flowing its way. His mother had Spanish origin; her great grandmother married an Irishman and moved to Ireland. It was at this time that he took up the first teaching job as a music master at James Allen’s Girls School in Wets Dulwich in South London. Holst was christened Gustavus Theodore von Holst, after his grandfather and his great uncle, Theodor who was a painter.

Gustav Holst was born on September 21, 1874 in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire in England as the first of two children to Adolph and Clara Von Holst. Among other teaching activities, he built up a strong tradition of performance at Morley College, where he served as musical director from 1907 until 1924 and pioneered music education for women at St Paul's Girls' School, where he taught from 1905 until his death in 1934. Holst was influenced during these years by socialism and attended lectures and speeches by George Bernard Shaw, with whom he shared a passion for vegetarianism, and by William Morris, both of whom were among the UK's most outspoken supporters of the socialist movement. By 1897, his first work as a student was ready – ‘Winter Idyll’ in which the influence of Wagner, Mendelsohn and Grieg was visible. During these early years, he was influenced greatly by the poetry of Walt Whitman, as were many of his contemporaries, and set his words in The Mystic Trumpeter (1904). Gustav also taught music to army troupes on a trip to Salonica (present day Thessaloniki, Greece) and Constantinople (now Istanbul) in 1918. However, his physical agonies were largely ignored by his father. In 1907, Holst also became director of music at Morley College. Holst's father Adolph von Holst, an organist, pianist and choirmaster, gave both piano lessons and recitals; and his mother, Clara von Holst, who died when Gustav was eight, was a singer.

| G Though the work was never performed in his lifetime, it made his musical style becoming more direct. His forte extended from operas to chamber music to vocal and orchestral music, Sanskrit literature, astrology and more, thanks to his innovative and intriguing mind. His father, Adolph was an established pianist, who taught and spent much of his time practicing piano, much to the disregard of his wife, Clara, and two children. The music was cheap and repetitive and not to Holst's liking, and he referred to this kind of work as "worming" and regarded it as "criminal". Leading a hectic life with conducting, teaching and lecturing obligations, his already frail health deteriorated when he had a collapse in 1923.
