Keep driving west for more hikes at Stone Mountain State Park. Trails are expensive to construct, maintain, and repair. It’s a short hike to reach and I’d recommend it first since it quickly fills up with people. Only regret is I forgot my camera. Most visitor centers and park offices are open, and masks or face coverings are required to enter.

Please arrive as early as possible or plan to come at another time. If you start from the Tory’s Den Parking Lot, you’ll have a quicker walk to Hanging Rock’s tallest waterfall. Eroded white quartzite cliffs are the defining feature of the park.
Hiked it with my 4 and 6 year old, and they did great even with the steeper and more treacherous parts. They’ll tell you which trails to take based on how far and how long you’re willing to go. There is an excellent brochure available at Hanging Rock Reserve at information boards and the Hanging Rock Discovery Centre (but not online). This is a long and strenuous one, but will lead you through shade and along the namesake creek. This is not the case, the Road is Closed Right after the entrance to the Montecito Lodge near the NordicSki Trailhead.
That’s largely thanks to the 700 species of mountain flora that reside in the park. Social distancing was fairly easy at the beginning but was impossible as you climb higher and there were quite a few people at the top. It’s about an hour and 15 minutes away from Hanging Rock State Park. Google maps will tell you this is open and you can get there by making a 3hr trip around the Three Rivers entrance to Sequoia and going up through the Pinehurst area. The afternoon sun was beaming, breaking through the tall pines of my campground at Hanging Rock State Park in North Carolina.

A wide, gently sloping trail leads downhill to a wooden observation deck with seating for safe views of the tall, burbling falls. Free swim from 5:00pm to 5:45pm. As you return to the starting point, take the signposted bitumised track on your right that heads uphill. Made my kid hold my hand at rock, steep drop off. This is the classic walk to the top of the beautiful Hanging Rock. Don't miss this if you go to Moro Rock. We saw the sign on our hike back down from Morro Rock and it was only .1 miles from the trail we were on, so we went for it. Especially at sunset. The hike to Hanging Rock has some of the park’s best views of Moro Rock. Indoor facilities are currently not available for reservation. i saw a lot of people wearing tennis shoes, and i’m not sure how they did it. Hanging Rock State Park is filled with interesting geological features and stunning views of rolling mountains. They are planning to reopen the Road on June 4th, according to the Park Rangers.
This trail to fantastic views above the General's Hwy of Moro Rock and Hanging Rock is easy to miss; it's from a pullover on Crescent Meadow Rd (not sure if the shuttle stops there, but there were no cars parked in the dirt area as no one really knows about this).
For an extra thrill, you can hang onto both Cook’s Wall and Moore’s Knob’s cliffs, up to 400 feet high. After 1.5 miles, turn right following signs for Hanging Rock and Moro Rock. As the namesake trail of the park, it’s the most popular.

Continue on main park road for approximately 1.8 miles turning left into a picnic area and parking lot. The trail starts out asphalt and turns to gravel after passing the intersection with Rock Garden Trail. Begin on the wide descending trail. The trailhead sign to Hanging Rock lists 0.1 miles. The trail's surface is gravel, dirt, and rock, and it has some uneven steps. It is about 45 minutes north of Winston-Salem. Pilot Mountain is one of the first parks in North Carolina to fill up on weekends and busier days, so please plan to arrive as early as possible. While the 4.40-mile trail is less trafficked than the others, it’s still a spectacular place to catch views of soaring eagles and fall foliage.
Moore’s Wall also happens to be the highest point in the park at 2,579 feet and features a stone observation tower with 360-degree views. Not too crowded for a Monday. Challenging enough to feel accomplished but still do-able. Very easy hike.

Drive past that for the boathouse and lake-based trails like Moore’s Wall, Cook’s Wall, and their offshoots. I have bad knees but was still able to do the trail, just had to stop a little more than others. The park sits in Stokes County, technically closer to Central North Carolina but we and others lump it in with Western North Carolina. Head to Old Salem for a look at early America through the Moravians’ eyes and don’t forget to grab a cookie from Winkler Bakery.
The trail to Hanging Rock was a little hard to find, but gorgeous view. The trail is challenging in places. To open a full screen version of the map, right-click and open in another tab or window. Once you get up to Hanging Rock the view is excellent..but don't stop there..the trail extends a little higher to an electricity station that has even more views.
