Almost as cool is the beyond-life-size 32x5-foot wraparound poster of the engine shop at the Tucker factory that is on display behind these units.
This feature drove each rear wheel directly with no transmission; thus, no reverse gear was possible, which was a major problem to say the least. The company was gone, but the legend — and the legacy — lives on. 1948 Tucker 48 B uilt by Preston Thomas Tucker, 51 examples were built, of which 47 survive now. One of the two “Tuckermatic” trannies went into Tucker #1026, which is one of the three Tuckers on display in this exhibit. Tucker, the car and the company, were shuttered and the massive Dodge-Chicago/Tucker factory went silent again.

Preston Tucker’s story is very much a human-interest story as it tells the tale of a self-taught automotive engineer who chose to be different and fight the establishment.
In the decades since, the Tucker 48 has become an American icon. This Tucker — sold at the factory bankruptcy auction without a powerplant — went missing in the 1950s until being spotted along a bank of the Mississippi River by police in Tennessee.
But Tucker took a different tack, designing a safety car … Tremulis wrote later that the 1949 sedans were going to have a wrap-around rear window, much like the 1963-1967 Corvettes. After all, he was building “the first new car in 50 years.” In order to get his cars out there on schedule, he did what many smaller (and even larger) manufacturers did: He borrowed from other manufacturers. We were invited to cover the grand opening of the Cammack Tucker Gallery at the AACA Museum in Hershey, Pennsylvania, October 2014 — and we were ecstatic. The museum is a massive building that houses almost two dozen antique buses on its bottom floor along with dozens of cars and other exhibits; all three floors were packed with people during this gala.
This transmission was retooled for production as a “standard shift.” But engineers were also working on a fully automatic transmission, the Tuckermatic, which was to be optional for an extra cost. To rush things along, a few pre-war Cord 810/812 transaxles from that front-wheel-drive car were purchased from scrap yards, rebuilt and pressed into service.
This is why the production-ready car had a central steering headlamp; it was the only practical means of achieving Preston’s goal.
These cars were made so well that, 66 years after they were built, 47 of them still remain, even though several of them were used as race cars in the 1950s; Tucker #1027, met its demise at Indianapolis Motor Speedway during testing. But he didn’t just buy cars. Studebaker was first with an all-new post-war model. Though just 51 cars were built, they were raced in NASCAR, became the subject of the Francis Ford Coppola film Tucker: A Man and His Dream, and have become some of the most valuable cars in the world. Unfortunately, the death of the corporation meant that, including the prototype, only 51 Tucker 48s were ever built at the factory. This “Car of Tomorrow” was the vision of Preston Thomas Tucker (1903-1956) of Ypsilanti, Michigan. Herbert D. Wilson, then the automobile editor of the Chicago Herald-American, wrote in the May 2, 1948 issue of the newspaper that his test drive indicated that “… the car loafs along at 80 with the throttle half open…the acceleration is terrific, extreme roominess, has excellent vision and a feeling of safety and solidity.” Tom McCahill, automotive editor for Mechanix Illustrated magazine, reported in the August 1948 issue that the Tucker was one of the “greatest performing passenger automobiles ever built on this side of the Atlantic.”, Cahill’s test drive of the vehicle found the car capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds.
